First edition of the festival “National Festival of Folk Choral Art”

On 8, 9 and 10 November 2024 the first “National Festival of Folk Choral Art” were held in the city of  Plovdiv, organized by the Association “Folklore and Contemporary” and “Ancient Plovdiv”, with the support of the Union of Bulgarian Music and Dance Artists.

The festival “National Festival of Folk Choral Art” is a significant musical event organized by the Folklore and Contemporary Association. The festival is not competitive. It is open to up to 8 choral formations selected by the Festivals Organising Committee, whose decision will be communicated to the applicants in due course. It is the wish of the organizers that this music festival becomes a desirable, annual musical event for the public of Plovdiv and the country.

“National Festival of Folk Choral Art” – Plovdiv 2024 aims to promote folk choral music, to bring together each year selected folk and school choirs from all over the country and to give the opportunity to performers and conductors, in a genre not very popular in Bulgaria, as well as promoting the composer’s work on a folk basis.

  • To stimulate the development of folk choral art in Bulgaria.
  • To establish the level of folk choral art in Bulgaria by comparing it with the international level.
  • To provoke the creation of new folk choirs.
  • To give the young people dedicated to the folk choral art the opportunity to communicate, to share impressions, to establish creative and informal contacts with each other.

Day 1

On the first day of the festival on the stage of the Small Basilica of Philippopolis performed the ensembles of the People’s Choir at the National Music Institute “Dobrin Petkov” – Plovdiv with conductor Yavor Taskov, Vocal Formation “Da Capo” – Lovech with conductor Dorothea Dinkova at the Music Academy “Musical World”.

Day 2

The ensembles “Svetoglas – The Sacrament of Bulgarian Polyphony®” with conductor Milen Ivanov and Academic Folk Choir® with conductor prof. Kostadin Buradzhiev graced the second day of the festival with their art.

Day 3

With their wonderful performances the young singers from the National Choir at NUFI “Shiroka Luka” with conductor Gancho Gavazov closed the festival.

During the three days of the forum the ensembles presented a repertoire that created a real feast for the souls of the audience, who richly rewarded the performers with their applause. The holding of the Festival showed the need for such a meeting of ensembles, conductors and audience and added another initiative to the rich cultural calendar of Plovdiv.

The “National Festival of Folk Choral Art” already has its admirers who are looking forward to its second edition. Surely it will be even more interesting with the participation of more good choir groups from all over the country.
